the 1940s are back

The era that brought bright red lipstick, utility garments and the most beautiful hairstyles the century had ever known is back! I've always been interested in anything from the 20's to the 40's, the lifestyles, the make-do and mend mentality, and the neighbourly attitude they had back then. Sure there were the bad times, after all it was the decade that brought war on an unprecedented scale, but there were the good times and that's what I choose to think of. Which is why this season I've been sporting beautiful luscious red lips, deep kohl eye liner and a little bit of the Puppini Sisters on the radio... Bliss!

I too love to read about and look at things from that era. Just lovely. Did you ever see the series "The 1940s House". I just loved that and I recently found the book that accompanied the show. It seemed to have lots of extra information and was really interesting.

Love those era fashions too! I`ve never heard of the Puppini Sisters but I like the Andrew Sisters.one of my Mum`s old favorites.
Thanks for the nice things you said at my blog :)
If you want free bricks you could just go to a building site and ask to see the foreman. I`m sure he would tell you it would be fine to gather some. I was shocked when I found out that what`s left over just goes to waste. Hubby says that whatever is left in front of a finished house is hauled off to the dump!

Oh yes, it is SOooo true!
The best eras. I adore the 1930s & 40s ... The twenties are intriging too!

I live in a tiny cottage that was built in the 30s ... The charm is evident everywhere. Inside and out. I wanted an old house ... One that hadn't been "fixed up".

People CARED about things back then. They took pride in keeping themselves & their homes nice. The man that built my cottage did so for his mother. He was a carpenter and used the bits and pieces left from other jobs. My bathroom has a 1920 wall mount toilet! The kitchen is the most "modern" with aqua green counters from 1940 ::sigh:: Everything is darling.

He wasted nothing ... & built a dream. The only thing missing? I wish the closets had been still filled with the clothes!

I'm going out tomorrow to buy red lipstick! Adored your post!

I wonder if anyone will look back on this time in sixty or seventy years time with any fondness. Will they talk with a sigh about those halcyon days, at the turn of the millennium, when all you needed was an ipod and a mobile phone to be happy? They will have been badly misled if they believe that.

I must admit that I'm a bit of a fan of Rose Murphy, Helen Kane and the like. Admittedly they are a bit earlier and raunchier than the performers in the era that the Puppini Sisters are re-creating (Great web site, by the way. Nice to hear 'Mr Sandman' again). I once bought a treasured tape (remember them)in a charity shop called 'Flappers, Vamps and Sweet Young Things'. All music by 1930's women singers with attitude. Red lipstick sporters to a woman.

What a fab post. I immediately started exploring the Puppini Sisters and bookmarked it. The 40s and all those great styles and big band music ROCK.

Just heard the Puppini Sisters, for the first time yesterday, I thought they were great. Your spinach, mustard and tomato quiche receipe was scrumptious, it was all eaten immediately! I have credited and thanked you on my blog. Love xx

Do we get to see a photo?
We just watched a great 40s film - in Czech with subtitles, called "The Dark Blue World."

I love to read UK blogs. All during my growing up years I was pen friends with my cousin, who lived in Purley Surrey. I've lost touch with her and now we are 40 yrs old. I'd love to find her again.

She writes haiku about nettles, would like to swim with seals and become completely self-sufficient.
